The Future of Education – The Flipped Classroom.

Here at WeTeach, we are strong advocates of the ‘flipped classroom’ . Our virtual methods of teaching and emphasis on technology, in addition to the usual paper-based classroom materials have led us to achieve a highly successful way of teaching. The idea of the flipped classroom is at the heart of what we do and has led to excellent grades and student retention.

Before we continue to boast the benefits of this revolutionary way of teaching, and the fantastic results it has brought to us and our students, what do we mean by the flipped classroom?

So as not to bore anybody with overly lengthy explanations, this image from Livescribe Education highlights all the main points associated to the flipped classroom:

A shown above, the flipped classroom cements the understanding of ideas and knowledge by enabling students to put theory into practice during school hours.

A course with WeTeach uses this concept as students will be given all the resources and support necessary to learn the material, which is then reviewed with a subject specialist via video collaboration once or twice a week and actively put to use to ensure understanding. Students benefit from the teacher and peer support rather than completing tasks alone and have the time to cover any issues or queries relating to the material.

An excellent article in the New York Times, ‘Turning Education Upside Down’ tells of a school in Detroit that is the first to completely flip all classes. This means ‘students watch teachers’ lectures at home and do what we’d otherwise call “homework” in class’. The article states how flipping the education has decreased fail rates dramatically so there is no doubt that this method will be taking over many more schools in the future.
